In the Valencian mountains you can live in a house without fans or air conditioning because there&#8217;s corrientica (breeze), as we commonly say. There&#8217;s also a river! And good people to have a drink with and make music together. The meaning I wanted to keep was that of the text: contemplation, patience, the fabric of life.<\/p>\n                    <p style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">The CoroDelantal NYC, directed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/natalieplazacarballo\" class=\"blue-link\" target=\"_blank\">Natalie Plaza<\/a> this time and with <a href=\"https:\/\/steinhardt.nyu.edu\/people\/markus-kaitila\" class=\"blue-link\" target=\"_blank\">Markus Kaitila<\/a> on piano, performed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.cvent.com\/event\/bef0369c-1f68-4d7c-a809-6a52a887b885\/summary\" class=\"blue-link\" target=\"_blank\">concert-tribute<\/a> that NYU made to my career as a composer on past June 20th.<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n\n        <!-- PRESENT SECTION -->\n        <hr class=\"fanzine-divider\">\n        <div id=\"present-section\" class=\"fanzine-section-header\">Present<\/div>\n        <hr class=\"fanzine-divider\">\n\n        <div class=\"fanzine-body-text\">\n            <p>The life of a woman composer, like that of any freelance female artist, is always observed with curiosity by the rest of humankind. Even I&#8217;m surprised and grateful by how lucky I am to create music and that this is my job, every single day!<\/p>\n            \n            <p>What&#8217;s happening now? Until the end of September, I&#8217;m living in <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacionclavelchelva.com\/actividades-culturales\/\" class=\"blue-link\" target=\"_blank\">Chelva<\/a>, thanks to the insistence of sound artists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boschsimons.com\/es\/\" class=\"blue-link\" target=\"_blank\">Peter and Simona<\/a>, the owners of the artist residency where I&#8217;m staying for these three months\u2014a house at least 500 years old near the Muslim Benacacira neighborhood. Chelva is a small mountain village equidistant from Valencia, Teruel, and Cuenca. A beautiful place, a treasure trove of heritage and nature. Living with my cats, Petra and Amaro. Composing to live, not just to earn money, but to gain life, or to surrender myself to life.<\/p>\n\n            <p>It&#8217;s quite funny that this town, like other small villages, has a town crier&#8217;s announcement that&#8217;s broadcast from the church loudspeakers. It starts with a pasodoble in F major, and then they make the day&#8217;s announcements. The church bells especially mark the important hours of the day: 8 a.m., noon, and 8 p.m. Thanks to them, I know what time it is without looking at a clock!<\/p>\n\n            <p>I still haven&#8217;t had a television for over 20 years; I barely watch series or movies either; I don&#8217;t use a microwave, and I hardly ever use YouTube except to upload my own videos. The washing machine in this house must be as old as me, or older! And the spin dryer looks like a salad spinner\u2014how amusing. The house is quiet; I almost only hear swifts, doves, church bells, and an occasional brush cutter used at the close countryside&#8230;<\/p>\n\n            <p>I feel very focused! I&#8217;ve recently finished two pieces:<\/p>\n            <ul style=\"margin-left: 20px; list-style-type: disc;\">\n                <li style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\"><strong>Dido&#8217;s Quej\u00edo<\/strong> (quej\u00edo is a Flamenco lament) for singing cellist and piano, a 50th birthday gift for my old friend Laura Gim\u00e9nez D\u00edaz, which will premiere next Saturday in Ja\u00e9n. It is a Flamenco fantasy on Henry Purcell&#8217;s famous Dido&#8217;s Lament.<\/li>\n                <li style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emails.edicionesdelantal.es\/c\/kl6g7\/7rigndb7\/xqx8-apr7os\" class=\"blue-link\" target=\"_blank\">De mi pecho<\/a> (From My Chest), for singing violist, a piece I needed to compose to heal my heart. I sent this piece to my other old friend Alicia Calabuig so she can try it out and work on it with a student in her summer courses or at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid. A conceptual and rather mathematical piece for four equal voices. How is it possible that we still don&#8217;t have an anthem after so many years of mischief? So, that&#8217;s what I&#8217;m finding a solution to.<\/li>\n                <li style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">A piece for flute and piano, <b>Amor por alegr\u00edas<\/b> (Love for Joys), dedicated to fantastic musicians <a href=\"https:\/\/isabeldobarro.com\/\" class=\"blue-link\" target=\"_blank\">Isabel Dobarro<\/a> and her husband <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torresruben.com\/\" class=\"blue-link\" target=\"_blank\">Rub\u00e9n Torres<\/a> for their wedding. Carlos Izquierdo is one of those treasures I discovered in Alicante; we&#8217;ve been artists-in-residence at the <a href=\"https:\/\/maca-alicante.es\/en\/home\" class=\"blue-link\" target=\"_blank\">MACA<\/a> (Museum of Contemporary Art of Alicante) together for five years.<\/li>\n            <\/ul>\n\n            <p style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: justify; margin: 0 0 15px 0; line-height: 1.5;\">\n                Regarding the exhibitions of my <a href=\"https:\/\/soniamegias.es\/en\/queer-scores\/\" style=\"color: #3498db; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: underline;\" target=\"_blank\">Queer Music Scores<\/a>, two very exciting opportunities are opening up, and the best part is that they&#8217;re not set to expire!\n            <\/p>\n            <ul style=\"margin-left: 20px; list-style-type: disc;\">\n                <li style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">Firstly, the Fonoteca Valenciana (Valencia Sound Archive), directed by Rub\u00e9n Garc\u00eda, will have my carefully preserved pieces available for consultation by researchers and curious individuals starting this coming September\u2014with gloves, of course!
