Dúa da Pel USA Tour, and more!
My dear people,
This is my last month in New York City, after a whole semester enjoying the amazing cultural life that the city offers. What an intense town, my goodness! First the snows, then the flowers and now, the concerts (the fruits). Great opportunities for my music to sound from diverse voices and instruments.
Soooo happy with all the work done till now! And also wishing to going back to Spain for resting and digesting all these experiences in the artistic retreat in Chelva (Valencia, Spain) during the summertime.
I’ll start by sharing with you the most resonant event of June: The Dúa da Pel USA Tour, singing and teaching in three states: New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Isn’t this fantastic?
If anyone wants to know more about any of the events, please don’t hesitate to reach us out at info@duadapel.org or follow us at Instagram (@duadapel), since we’ll be announcing everything with their respective posters, videos, tickets, etc.
Here you have some documents to enjoy from home!
Bye, bye World Premiere, by CoroDelantal NYC
CoroDelantal continue celebrating our 15th Anniversary through funny concerts and performances. Here I share you the premiere of one of our experimental pieces, premiered at WindScape Brooklyn as part of our concert series "The Breath Within":
The first of my Cubanías in 4 Hands
Brave Susana Pérez Otero, piano professor at the Conservatory of Vigo (Galicia, Spain), is a great specialist in my music, with so many of my pieces in her repertoire. She has a duet along with Cuban double bass player Óscar Rodríguez, and she also programs contemporary music in her classes at the conservatory, something that is not so common!!
Last May, two of her students played fantastically the first of my three ‘Cubanías’ for piano in four hands. Here you can listen and watch! Thanks, Susana, for your labor in music!
Qué mar da #2 by Dúa da Pel
In previous AltaVoz I started to share with you the concert series "Qué mar da" (What the Sea Brings) by Dúa da Pel at the Museo del Mar (Museum of the Sea) in Santa Pola (Alicante, Spain). These 10 concerts happened last fall, on Wednesdays.
They are short concerts, about 40 minutes long with bilingual explanations, since in that area of Spain the audience is quite international! In each of these events, people had to vote their favorite song to make it repeat it the next Wednesday.
Here you have the second one, so that you can enjoy it from home.
In addition to Dúa da Pel’s tour across the United States —which you can check out on the duet’s website or in the EdicionesDelantal calendar—I’ll be hosting a couple of events to wrap up my artistic and research residency in New York, which I’m listing here:
The NYU Steinhardt Alumni Association, at the New York University, is hosting this concert in my honor for having been a Fulbright scholar, having completed my master’s degree there a few years ago, and currently serving as the Artist-in-Residence at Espacio de Culturas, which is NYU’s Spanish cultural center.
This event will take place on my birthday, and we will celebrate with great joy and fanfare, including the world premiere of Lentitude, a meditative piece based on poems by María Alonso Espasandín, a very talented poet from A Coruña (Galicia, Spain). The piece lasts just over 20 minutes, is written for piano and treble choir, dedicated to pianist Rosa Torres-Pardo and professor Antoni Pizà. Lentitude is a commission by the Foundation for Iberian Music, which is part of the City University of New York (CUNY), the university where I’ve been conducting research since January.
The concert will feature a program leaded by CoroDelantal and Dúa da Pel, showing some of my queer music scores and other pieces for voice and piano, with soloists from the New York City scene and pianist-professors from NYU. I feel so lucky to receive this recognition!
Every year for the past 22, the experimental music venue (Le) Poisson Rouge has paid tribute to the legendary avant-garde composer Terry Riley. His piece In C is a landmark in the history of musical experimentation. Years ago, I wrote an article about it for Doce Notas magazine titled ‘La venganza de Terry Riley’ (Terry Riley’s Revenge) which includes the sheet music.
Well, this year I’ve been invited, along with astonishing musicians such as Megan Schubert or Nick Hallet, to be one of the vocalists at this great event. What a wonderful way to celebrate Summer Solstice with music!
So few more Tuesdays left for our singing activity in Crown Heights, Brooklyn!! The cultural center Salon on Kingston hosts our sessions "I Do Sing in Spanish with Sonia Megías", an open mic without a mic but with a grand piano. They’re therapeutic and there’s songbooks!
Come with your friends and spend a special evening singing in group, or as a soloist!
Looking forward to celebrate with you the closing of I DO SING with a party on the 30th!
